-strategic plan for schools produced
The Volleyball Cooperation Programme (VCP) Teachers Course organised by the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) came to a close on Saturday after five days of practical and theoretical sessions from instructors from the FIVB, Physical Education Unit, GVF and Guyana Olympic Association.
Mr. Miguel Holz Bodlaender, an FIVB International Volleyball Instructor from Chile, was the main facilitator who presented FIVB accreditation certificates to twenty-six (26) of the thirty-one (31) participants.
The participants included five trainers from the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force and teachers and volunteers from various schools from across Guyana.
According to a release, presentations from a number of trained instructors allowed participants to achieve much more than accreditation in volleyball during the time spent at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Mr. Albert Wilson of Medx Precision Fitness, Mr. Trevor Smith of the Guyana Volleyball Referees Council, Mr. Nicholas Fraser and Mr. Lindley Langhorne of the Physical Education Unit as well as Mr. Charles Corbin, Dr. Karen Pilgrim and Mr. Noel Adonis of the Guyana Olympic Association, all made very valuable presentations on relevant topics to the participants during the Course.
As an integral aspect of the Course, the participating teachers were required to plan and execute a volleyball festival with secondary school students.
Students from Lodge Secondary School were invited to participate on Friday afternoon and they left very excited, having participated in a mass volleyball festival involving ten teams.
Mr. Bodlaender according to the release was pleased to note that the students were very eager to participate and learn as much as they could about the sport.
Arguably the most important outcome of the VCP Volleyball Course was a plan produced by the teachers to introduce the game into the Physical Education and Sport Scheme for grades 7 to 11.
The final document will be presented by the Physical Education Unit to the Ministry of Education for review.
At the ceremonial closing ceremony, Teacher James Craig, a Physical Education Teacher from Linden Foundation Secondary, delivered the vote of thanks and stated that teachers in Guyana are now in better stead to teach volleyball.
He also opined that the course was very necessary and that the teachers would be sharing their skills not only in their schools of origin, but with the wider communities as well.
Mr. Nicholas Fraser stated that there is need to improve the quality of teaching in physical education in secondary schools and two critical areas of need are training and equipment.
He also implored on the teachers to implement all which was learnt and to strengthen physical education in their schools.
Mr. Bodlaender urged the teachers to reach for higher heights as they have only just begun the process of learning and practising the sport. He also stated that activities such as this should be made up of good experiences since it is important for children in their development as productive individuals in society.
In closing, Mr. Bodlaender posited that he appreciated the work of all the participants, adding that although coaches win medals, it is the teachers who develop the game.
Mr. Shuffler, the President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation, in closing encouraged the participants to take back what was learnt by stating that “attending the course is like eating food … as you should digest what was heard, strengthen yourselves and go out with the energy to deliver.”
Mr. Shuffler and Mr. Bodlaender presented the certificates to the participants and distributed volleyballs to the participating schools.
