– as GABA continues developmental drive
As the Executive of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) continues their drive to expose boxers in their charge to frequent and qualitative activity, eight pugilists have been selected to engage in four bouts when the September edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza gets underway at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday September 30 next.
Bantamweights Branco Gouveia and Richard Williamson will oppose each other in a bout that promises to be entertaining. Williamson has improved tremendously since his emergence to fistic duty but his progress has been stymied by Imran Khan who captured three decisions from their four encounters. That apart, Williamson has held his own against some of the best pugilists in his division and would be anxious to redeem himself following his recent defeat at the hands of Khan.
Gouveia may have other ideas and his attacking style may very well prove to be too much for the Berbician. Of course this is all speculation and fans would just have to be at the venue to witness the action as it unfolds.
Kevin David and Travis Fraser, two relatively young amateurs will clash in a jnr./welterweight bout moments before Kishon Simon and Mark Anthony, two other jnr/welterweights, square off for honours. Welterweights, Trevon King and Warren George will bring the curtains down on the amateur segment, 30 minutes before the professional pugilists take to the ring.
In this segment, Simeon Hardy will tackle Winston Pompey in a highly anticipated slugfest while Trinidad based Guyanese, Jermaine King, fights Barbadian Miguel Antoine. Troy Lewis and Kelsie George will duke it out over 4 rounds. The latter fighter is making his professional debut after completing a decent amateur career while Shaheed Ali, another debutant, will also take off his shirt for the first time when he battles Carlton Skeete in a 4 round bantamweight contest.
The ProAm boxing affair is an initiative of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Communications Network (NCN).
The action gets underway at 20:00 and admission is $1000 for adults with children being asked to pay half that amount.
Those unable to visit the venue can tune in to NCN television for live pound for pound action.
