The battle for honours in this year’s Topco Juices National Junior Chess Qualifiers has intensified with Anthony Drayton of GTI and Cecil Cox of Queen’s College remaining strong contenders at the conclusion of the halfway stage. Both players have amassed 4 points apiece after an impeccable first day performance.
In a tournament of stiff rivalry several other players are bundled at three points apiece including Roberto Neto, Ryan Mc Kay, Meikel Mahabir, Suhai Feng and Rashad Hussain, while Shane Yussuf and Faraad Baksh are on 2 ½ points each. Daryll Calistro and Viddesh Shameer both have 1 ½ points, while the five players on one point are Steffon Daniels, Dravin Drickpaul, Anthony Sookram, Pardev Bissoon and Vickanand Deokie. Commy Heyliger is yet to score and remains in the cellar.
The championship is currently underway at the West Demerara Secondary School, Pouderoyen and twenty three players are competing for a place among the final seven to challenge Ron Motilall in a single round robin formatted tournament to determine the 2011 National Junior Chess Champion.
With four more rounds to go, the respective players are battling stringently for a final berth among the top seven performers for the tournament slated for sometime next month.
The other points standing up to this stage reads: Roberto Neto, Ryan Mc Kay, Meikel Mahabir, Suhai Feng and Rashad Hussain earned three points each, while Shane Yussuf and Faraad Baksh scored two and a half points apiece.
Kana and Sham Khan, Saeed Ali, Christine Singh, Sheriffa Ali and Shane Rampertab are bundled together on two points apiece, while Daryll Calistro and Viddesh Shameer are on one and a half points each. Five players, Steffon Daniels, Dravin Drickpaul, Anthony Sookram, Pardev Bissoon and Vickanand Deokie have secured a point each while Commy Heyliger is yet to score and remains in the cellar.
The action continues at the same venue this Saturday from 13:00hrs and while it is highly improbable that the dynamics would undergo any significant changes, one cannot ignore the mercurial nature of the sport.
