-above $200,000 at stake in 8-team 50 overs Berbice showdown
The battle lines will be drawn from this weekend when the 8th annual Busta Champion of Champions 50-overs knock-out tournament sponsored by Guyana Beverage Inc., bowls off featuring the top 8 clubs in the Ancient County including defending champions, Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets.
Details for this year’s competition were revealed yesterday at the sponsors Diamond, East Bank Demerara Headquarters where General Manager Mr. Robert Selman, Marketing Manager Shaleeza Yadram and Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster shared the head table.
Despite the budget being reduced somewhat, the competition is here to stay according to Selman in his feature remarks. The sports enthusiast noted that Guyana Beverage Inc. has been doing business in Berbice for the past 16 years and they have a duty to maintain their support of youth development through this competition which has been efficiently managed by the RHTY&SC.
Guyana Beverage will by year end complete the construction of a new Bond in Berbice which will see an increased and much more proficient level of servicing of the their customers in the Ancient County.
Four matches will be contested in the competition this weekend with defending champs Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets tackling Skeldon at the Area h Ground; Young Warriors will travel to face hosts Edinburg; Blairmont will entertain Police and Memorex Bermine will travel to take on host team Port Mourant, play commencing at 09:30hrs at all venues.
Teams will be provided with coloured tee shirts as part of the sponsorship package. The organisers are promising that this year’s competition will be of a high standard as all would have come to expect.
“The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club would like to recommit itself to making the 2011 Busta tournament a success and most importantly to promote the brand of Busta as never before,” Foster declared.
Some of the players who will grace this year’s competition are Anthony Bramble, Junior Blair, Moshin Perkhan, Richard Ramdeen, Assad Fudadin, Esaun & Royston Crandon, Brandon Bess and Michael Newland.
The winning team will be rewarded with $80,000; the losing finalist will pocket $50,000 while other top individual performers will also be rewarded with trophies and other prizes.
Selman complimented the people of Berbice for their continued support which has enabled the company to sponsor this competition over the past 8 years.
He complimented the RHTY&SC for the splendid job they have been doing over the years and the touch of quality they have attached to the tournament while urging other clubs to take a page out of their book if they are serious about holistic success.
“I want to say special thanks to the RHTY&SC for a job well done for the past eight years and I know come 2012, Busta and our parent company SM Jaleel & Company of Trinidad and Tobago will be alongside them again. When we spend our money it is well spent. It is used for the purpose intended and we are very happy.”
Touching on the development of young people, Selman noted that sports is the only way to keep them away from the ills of liming on the streets.
“It is the only way and we will continue to contribute towards this. We have also been sponsoring football over the years. I was very happy when I read the papers today {yesterday} to see the exploits made by our own Devendra Bishoo in being named the World’s Emerging Player. The Busta tournament has made a contribution towards Bishoo’s success as he played in this competition.
It gives you pride and pleasure to know that we have contributed for him to make this success. I also remember Chanderpaul and Sarwan also playing in Busta cricket and we are proud of this.”
