Defending champions Bartica Challengers (BC) sponsored by Hopkinson Mining was down to face off with New Line Cavaliers (NLC) in the final of the Aruwai Mining Inc. / D&C Promotions Twenty20 knock-out cricket competition last night at the Bartica Community Centre Ground.
The 3rd place match-up featured West Berbice Super Kings (WBSK) and Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) who both lost their semi-final matches on Saturday evening at the same venue.
Excellent work by the ground staff saw play coming off on Saturday despite heavy rain for more than two hours in the early evening which also saw the promoters reducing the first semifinal between New Line Cavaliers and West Berbice Super Kings to a 15/15 affair, while further rain at the start of the second semifinal reduced that encounter between Bartica Challengers and Gandhi Youth to a 10/10 clash.
Bartica, enjoying home advantage and a record of never losing at this venue, made light work of GYO winning their game by a commanding 9 wickets; NLC strolling to 117-5 with 2 overs to spare responding to WBSK’ 115-8 off their allotted 15 overs.
Bartica won the toss and invited the visitors to take first strike and a pitch that offered enticing bounce for the pace bowlers. GYO were never allowed to settle as they lost wickets steadily throughout their 10 overs ending on 51-8.
None of their batsmen reached double figures owing to some stifling bowling and excellent fielding by the home team; Abilash Deokie and Triston Liverpool made 8 each.
Doing the damage with the ball for the Barticians were Gavin Morris (2-7), Robert Moore (2-9), Kurt Welcome (1-7) while Glen Fredericks and Sherwin Murray both took 1-10; from 2 overs each.
Led by an unbeaten 21 (1×6 2×4) from their Captain, Robin Narine, Bartica Challengers coasted to 55-1 from 6.4overs. Former Guyana youth player Troy Cornelius was there with his skipper on 13 (1×6 1×4) when victory was achieved.
NLC also won the toss against WBSK and invited them to take first strike. Their openers Raffel Estriado and Artley Bailey gave their team a solid platform of 44 for the first wicket in 5 overs before Estriado was the first to go for a compact 30 (2×6 2×4).
Bailey was dismissed in the 9th over for 20 with the score on 63-3. Were it not for Keon Joseph’s 33 which shored up the middle order and extras healthy contribution of 18, WBSK could have found themselves posting a less competitive total as they ended on 115-8.
Leading the bowling for NLC was Paul Wintz (2-7), their Captain Gajanand Singh (2-19); Andre Percival (2-27), Kellon Carmichael took 1-36.
NLC with a star studded line felt that it was going to be smooth sailing to victory but WBSK had other ideas as they had their more experienced opponents on the ropes at 29-3 in the 5th over, Shemroy Barrington (12), Farouk Hussain (1) and Gajanand Singh (5) all back in the players dug out.
It took some composed batting from Waheid Edwards 35* (1×6 3×4) and Percival 23* (3×6) to guide NLC to victory after Wintz and Ishwar Singh also went cheaply; NLC ending on 117-5 off 13 overs.
Eon Abel led the bowling for WBSK with 2-16 while there was one each for Krishnadat Ramoo and Steffon Adams.
A large was expected to be on hand at the Bartica Community Ground last night to witness what was anticipated to be an exciting final with the winner collecting the first place prize of $600,000 and the loser, $300,000.
