ESPN to broadcast five matches live
The WICB Regional senior One-Day Super Cup cricket tournament has been confirmed for Guyana from October 19-31 and five matches, including the semis and Final will be played under lights and televised live by ESPN.
While the WICB recognizes the GCB and will continue to fix matches here until anything changes, it is understood that there will be a special committee set up to address some of the issues affecting Guyana’s cricket while Government will also play a supporting role in overseeing the implementation of proper structures and systems being put in place for the revival of Guyana’s cricket.
It was reported that Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo had intended to set up an IMC to be headed by Guyana Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony, which would have run the affairs of Guyana’s cricket.
A cricket board source said yesterday that it was not the intention of Government to take over the cricket and while the President had opined that the GCB was an illegal entity based on the fact that the Chief Justice had ruled that the GCB, like all the other cricket Boards in Guyana, was legally a non entity.
“The Sports Minister seems genuinely interested in the survival of cricket in Guyana and while he wants to see the right people administering the game and the GCB constitution updated, he seems reluctant to get involved in any take over of the cricket in any forceful manner,” the source said.
An ‘oversee committee’ is being set up to deal with a number of issues and the WICB is monitoring the level of Government involvement.
A WICB official said yesterday that the GCB will continue to run WICB tournaments in Guyana and confirmed that the Regional One-Day competition will remain in Guyana after Barbados had been put on Stand by for a possible switch pending discussions between the WICB and the Guyana Government.
Yesterday GCB President Ramsay Ali disclosed at a Press conference that the budget for next month’s Regional One-Day competition has already been done while venues and Hotels for the players have already been identified.
“We have already set up a tour committee for the Regional One-Day competition and due to internet and other required facilities only games at the Stadium could be televised. The semi-finals and final for sure will be televised live in addition to two other games,” Ali explained.
The GCB head said that the Guyana/Barbados match is one of the games being considered for live ESPN coverage but we have not yet finalised a venue for that match since Berbice usually generates tremendous spectator support when Guyana oppose Barbados there.
Ali revealed that the off-the-field issues have delayed the implementation of some of the things required for Guyana’s preparation for next month’s competition adding that the board’s TDO, former Test pacer Reon King is working on putting together the technical aspects of team preparation.
“We know when and where the Regional One-Day competition is being held so we can now fix a date for the Senior Inter-County 50-over competition. This competition which will be used to select the squad for trial matches which will be used to pick the Guyana team since we want to make every effort to have our best team on the field next month,” Ali informed.
