President of the Alpha Football Club, Odinga Lumumba, informed the media yesterday that he has been written to by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) giving him permission to present a viable proposal on the staging of a Professional Football League here.
Lumumba informed that he recently received the letter from the GFF General Secretary George Rutherford and is in the process at determining the cost factor to run such a league and also alert and tentatively secure stakeholders for this venture. Lumumba was adamant that this programme would have to be a joint venture involving government and the corporate sector along with private individuals if success is to be achieved.
He informed that he has been given 9 months to come up with a plan and to present the detailed proposal to the GFF. Lumumba feels that a Pro League in Guyana can match those in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. He noted the economic benefits with the creation of between 500 and 600 jobs and highlighted the importance of government’s support. He cited the involvement of the T&T government in their programme.
The rehabilitation of grounds around the country was one key area touched on that must be seriously addressed to sustain the league.
Lumumba also called on the GFF to put its house in order, noting the current problem with the Georgetown Football Association (GFA). He cited the need for dialogue, the removal of the suspension and giving the GFA an independent status with voting rights. He wants the executive of the two bodies to work out the impasse, noting the comments made recently by Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz on the matter and the need for football to be played in the city.
Meanwhile, the Alpha boss disclosed that the club along with Pele have come to an amicable resolution of the outstanding kit prize from the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation. He noted that K&S has made a reasonable offer to compensate and the deal is currently being sorted out and should be hopefully concrete by next week.
Lumumba said that they decided to work with K&S in the interest of the game and good relations, noting though that if K&S do not deliver his club will be forced to take other action but he does not see things going in that direction at this point.
K&S was due to provide kits for the top teams emerging from the last tournament after sealing a deal with the company Plus One. However, an Indian company took over the Plus One operation and negotiation to honour the previous commitment was not honoured. After queries and threats of legal action the parties have since met and dealt with the matter without outside intervention.
