West Indies/ Pakistan female teams arrive in Guyana
Both the West Indies and Pakistan female cricket teams arrived in Guyana yesterday and the Guyana Cricket Board said at a press conference yesterday that everything is in place of this weekend’s t20 double headers at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
Pakistan need to win both matches tomorrow and Sunday at Providence from 18:00hrs under lights to draw the four match series after being beaten by the Caribbean ladies in the first two games in Grenada and local fans will be keen to see world rated batter Jamaican Stafanie Taylor and Trinidadian spin Queen Anisa Mohammed in action for the home team this weekend.
Guyana senior female team Captain, teenager Shamaine Campbell and fellow Berbican pacer Tremayne Smartt are the Guyanese in the West Indies side which also defeated the Pakistani girls in the ODI series.
President of the GCB Ramsay Ali explained that Women’s cricket has been giving Caribbean fans a lot to cheer about recently and encouraged the fans to come out tomorrow and Sunday to support the West Indies girls, especially since Admission is free.
Both teams are being accommodated at the princess Hotel and Ali said the four matches this weekend are being organized by the West Indies Cricket Board in collaboration with the GCB, adding that the junior matches involving Guyana and Trinidad, which starts at 13:00hrs each day should provide excellent exposure on the big stage for the Guyanese.
The GCB Head explained that off-the field issues which caused some uncertainty in the staging of the matches here and the small budget by the WICB resulted in more promotion of the event not being done in Guyana.
The GCB has secured sponsorship for a small promotional campaign while music will provide additional beyond the boundary entertainment at Providence tomorrow and Sunday.
Only the ‘Green Stand’ which can accommodate 2, 737 people, will be opened. Fans can also use the Mound but Ali said if there is a large crowd the other stands will be opened, adding that although spectators can enter the venue free, all normal security checks will be in place since this is an ICC international event.
Car parking tickets can be bought for $500 at the GCB office and on-field presentation will be held after Sunday’s match which will be the final game of the series.
GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie, who along with the Board’s PRO Terry Holder, its Territorial Development Officer Reon King, Vice-President Faizul Bacchus and assistant Treasurer Dru Bahadur represented the GCB yesterday, said that ICC has cleared the issue of the junior match being played before the International contest since two separate pitches will be used.
Meanwhile, the Guyana junior side which includes senior nationals Akaze Thompson, Joan Van Sertima and 13-year-old Berbice off-spinner Phaffiana Millington, was named yesterday.
