Matthew Centrowitz – who has Guyanese heritage – celebrated winning the Bronze medal in the1500M event at the recently concluded Track & Field World championships, Daegu, South Korea.
Matthew comes from a ”rich” history of family in sports, which has strong roots in Guyana through his Grandfather, Colin Bannister, Mother, Beverly Bannister Centrowitz and sister, Lauren Centrowitz all athletes with substantial accomplishments in Guyana and the United States.
His father Matthew Centrowitz Sr, also a former US record holder (still standing) and 2 time Olympian with medals, is the current track and field coach at American University in Washington DC.
He also adds to the mix of athletic talent, immediately brought to the table, with Matthew’s abilities and accomplishments in track and field this year which has made so many of us proud. Guyanese and Americans “alike” can be proud and know that Matthew acknowledges his Guyanese roots and heritage and is proud to be called Guyanese too despite competing for the US.
Centrowitz, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Oregon, came in behind legendary Kenyans Asbel Kiprop and Silas Kiplagat.
“I just wanted to stay patient,” Centrowitz told NBC Sports after the race. “I found myself in fifth with 200 meters to go and didn’t want to get boxed in, so I swung wide with 150 to go. I just kept pumping and kept fighting. I wanted it so bad.”
Centrowitz is now the youngest American to ever medal in the 1500m in either the world championships or the Olympics.
