Guyana senior team member teenager Akaze Thompson was the star of yesterday’s National under-19 female t20 cricket practice match at the DCC ground in Georgetown on a day in which the Berbicians again boycotted the trails in support of their Board’s opposition to the functioning of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
According to the GCB the two Berbice players from last month’s regional senior competition in Barbados who are eligible for National under-19 selection (Phaffiana Millington & Trishanie Cort) have made them selves available for National selection and should be present on Thursday when the next trial match is held.
The trials are to select a Guyana under-19 team to play the Trinidad and Tobago national under-19 team in two t20 games at the Guyana National Stadium this weekend when West Indies oppose Pakistan in two t20 female Internationals at Providence.
Yesterday the powerful Thompson clobbered an unbeaten 34 with four fours and a six after taking 20 from the final over bowled by former West Indies female player June Ogle-Thomas.
The right-handed Thompson got support from Katana Mentore (27), Latoya Smith (26), Nalini Smointa (17) and Hema Singh (11) as the under-19 line up reached 163-7 off their 20 overs against a Rest team captained by senior Guyana female player Abina Parker.
Oneka Wallerson (2-37) and Renika Issacs (2-21) were the most successful bowlers for Parker’s X1 who were restricted to 128-9 when their 20 overs expired.
Parker led the way with a solid 55 while Ogle Thomas made 16 and Isaacs 14 as the teenagers won by 35 runs.
Thompson enjoyed a good day at the office with 3-16 while Jocell Joseph had 2-6.
