Dear Sport Editor,
In response to a letter captioned Letter to the Sports Editor….PHANTOM SQUAD, PHANTOM WRITERS AND PHANTOM CRICKET CLUBS. I would first like to address the caption that we are phantoms writers and belongs to phantom clubs.
We cannot remember when last Mr. Colin Europe was seen in West Demerara during our limited cricket matches. However just before the GCB elections, he was very active at a big fete hosted by Mr. Sanasie at Wales where members of the Essequibo Cricket Board were given the emperor’s treatment. Mr. Lalta Degamber, chairman of the WDCA, admitted that he is unaware of our existence and this is a huge confession, it goes to show how much he and his president Anand Sanasie know of West Demerara Cricket. This is why we were pleading in our last letter for someone to come and assist our cricket.
In 2002 Harnarine Tiwari the then president of West Demerara C.A. was removed from office by undemocratic methods and Anand Sanasie prevailed. This saw the introduction of ‘CRICKET IN THE COURT’. Sanasie then teamed up with Gopaul Singh and Raj Singh.
A similar situation took over the East Bank Demerara C.A. with Gopaul Singh being president. That also attracted the attention of the court, thereafter the rest is public knowledge (DCB and now GCB) Mr. Europe is fully aware of this because he was ousted from the Demerara Cricket Board.
The letter spoke of Mr. Anand Sanasie record as an administrator in West Demerara. Distribution of cricket gears, construction of a 2.3 Million Dollars media centre, sight screen and press box at Wales, free cricket balls for all tournaments managed by WDCA since 2006, Upper and Lower League WDCA Competitions. Cricket at all age group level continues to improve when compared to the rich and well established clubs in Georgetown. West Demerara was the first association to rewrite its constitution in 2004 and include term limit to the presidency of that association.
The WDCA constitutionally conducts elections every two years in the month of April. Most recently, players from WDCA were selected to represent Guyana at the regional under 15 and under 19 tournaments.
We would like to ask Mr. Anand Sanasie a few questions directly with reference to the letter:
1. Who and which clubs received the cricket gears?
2. The cost of the construction mentioned at Wales. Who spent the money as at that time the WCC was under the control of Guysuco?
3. Where is the audited financial statement to suggest that sum was spent?
4. How much grounds (names) on the West Demerara are used by the WDCA?
5. Other than the Aqua Farm Competitions among a few clubs on the West Bank, how much competitions are played on the West Demerara?
6. How much and when were they played with regards to the Under 15, Under 19 and female competitions?
7. What are the methods used for selecting West Demerara Squads?
8. What is the purpose of having term limits when Mr. Anand Sanasie effectively is President since 2002 with Mr. Shradhananda being placed as president in short intervals (2/3months) and on each occasion being replaced by Mr. Sanasie?
9. If elections were held, why was it not made public and why the majority of the clubs were not invited?
10. Can we, for the purpose of democracy, hold elections on the West Demerara with all the clubs involved and the police providing protection?
Mr. Europe said that Mr. Clifford Reis praised Mr. Sanasie for his achievements. This must be a midnight joke! Mr. Ramsey Ali according to Europe and Degamber, is a successful CEO of a prospering manufacturing entity and holds several executive positions on many reputable organisations such as the Book Foundation and the Scouts Association. It is the same Mr. Clifford Reis who was the Chairman of Banks DIH when Mr. Ramsey Ali was disconnected from that company.
We conclude by saying that we urge the Government of Guyana to intervene and fix this problem as was ruled by the Honourable Chief Justice Ian Chang S.C. CCH.
