Dear Editor,
I was a leading activist of the PPP for many years, and I have worked in nearly every organ of the party. I know that organisation very well. I am very confident that under the stewardship of Dr Jagan, Guyana would not have engaged in the level of corruption and immorality that we now experience.
We all must accept that the PPP is not the party that we knew and grew up in. Under Jagdeo and Ramotar, there have been dramatic changes that drastically diluted the pristine policies and programmes of the party. We must admit that we live in a fast changing world and Guyana is a cog in the Global economic, social and cultural crises which is irresolvable in its present form.
The fellows who have inherited power through the hard work that we did are unable to manage the country. They have no experience in managing anything and worst yet they surround themselves with people that are not part of the traditional professional or entrepreneurial class.
So your question to me – who do we put to resolve this insurmountable task – must be answered in this way. The answer lies first of all in the unity of all the Guyanese people agreeing to a common economic, political and social reform that meets the needs of all sections of our society, especially the youths, women and the poorer class of people.
Everyone must feel that they have a stake in our country. They must feel represented and can represent themselves at all levels of society. New structures need to be created and the traditional ones, like regular local and municipal systems, need to be revived and controlled by the ordinary people.
The AFC has good intentions, but lacks the ability to mobilise ordinary people and inspire them to get involved at the grassroots level.
They must begin to look for unity at every opportunity by relating to common things that can unite us and there are many, I assure you. The AFC is too insular – it must behave as if it can govern by doing active things for people and test its ability to govern and achieve things in the wider society.
The APNU will not be able to cross the racial divide due to its arrogance. It is too slow in learning how to inspire people and make them trust it. The older Indians, like myself, are very fearful of the PNC past terror and what it did to them.
They will need many assurances that the PNC (never mind how much it covers itself in different names) can be trusted to govern for all of Guyana and not the rich Indians and their political members, family, friends and supporters. The same thing that this regime is doing.
The Jagdeo-Ramotar clique in the PPP can be defeated and a United opposition that puts Guyana first can win a landslide at the polls. That is do-able. In the meanwhile, other formations are coming abroad that will take up that challenge – there is sometime left to formulate that movement.
