The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) will be hosting an International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Teachers’ Volleyball Course, beginning at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall today and concluding on Saturday.
According to a release from the Ministry of Education’s Physical Education Department, Chile’s, Miguel Holz Bodlaender, who is a FIVB Volleyball Instructor, will conduct the course that is to begin at 9am with a preliminary session before a 10am opening ceremony.
“Bodlaender will take into consideration the needs of the teachers as is spelt out in the Caribbean Examinations Council’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Physical Education and Sport Examinations,” the release indicated.
It was also said that the needs for teaching volleyball according to the FIVB programmes will be one of the key areas. The participants will have a session from a renowned strength, conditioning and nutrition specialist on Thursday.
Participants are required to organise a festival involving students to round-up presentations from the facilitators and finally, the participants, in a session with the Physical Education Department of the Ministry of Education, will produce specific plans for the re-introduction of the sport with the schools’ system.
“Sports in schools are on the front burner of the Ministry of Education as the Physical Education teachers receive another shot in the arm to improve their teaching skills and knowledge,” the release continued.
In addition, it was noted that it is a part of the volleyball federation’s plan for getting the sport in the schools. The federation has already gotten an approval from the FIVB for a massive Primary Schools Programme which should commence in the coming months.

College, St Joseph’s High School, Tutorial High School, Dolphin Secondary, North Ruimveldt Secondary, New Campbellville Secondary, North Georgetown Secondary, Mahaicony Secondary, Rosignol Secondary, Bush Lot Secondary, Berbice High Secondary, Lower Corentyne Secondary, Tutorial Academy, New Amsterdam Secondary, Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary, Bartica Secondary, 3-Mile Secondary Annex, Harmony Secondary, Linden Foundation Secondary, New Silver City Secondary, Wismar/ Christianburg Secondary, McKenzie High Secondary.
The Ministry of Education would like to thank the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission for their continued involvement and support of teachers’ training programmes, which are now provided on an annual basis.
