-Bermuda anxious to reverse fortunes
Captain of the Golden Jaguars, Chris Nurse is very upbeat about his team’s chances of carting off the honours when the side clash with Bermuda in their Group ‘B’ 2014 World Cup qualifier, at the National Stadium this evening.
The captain voiced these sentiments when he appeared at a press conference to brief the media on the plans for tonight’s encounter. The function was chaired by acting President of the GFF, Franklin Wilson who was joined by his Organising Secretary, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, and the Manager of the Guyana team, Mark Xavier.
The Bermudians flew into Guyana on Sunday night and were represented by two coaches Gary Darrell and Stephen Coddington, while one of the local players, Keivin Sullivan, joined his captain at the head table.
The Bermudians lost their first encounter to Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 and according to Darrell, are anxious to reverse their fortunes. Nurse countered with a promise that his boys are also going for the win. He reminded that his team is currently at the top of the group on 3 points and are entering the game tonight full of confidence. Nevertheless, the captain said that he is not taking the opposition lightly.
The Golden Jaguars enjoyed a decisive 2-0 victory over Barbados in a fiercely contested match at the National Stadium Friday evening last, but the pundits felt that the margin should have been wider had it not been for many missed chances. Nurse explained that the team hardly had enough time to practice as a unit since the local players were competing in the local league and were unavailable for rigid practice sessions. “The players could not be expected to gel as a unit that quickly since it has been quite sometime since they had played on the same team,” exhorted Nurse. He singled out two of the strikers, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Shawn ‘Bubbly’ Beveney as examples of this anomaly.
Meanwhile, the Bermudian coaches promised a keen tussle even though many players are relatively young. He said that there are also several players in the squad that play in the professional leagues. “Some of these guys are also a part of the academies in the United Kingdom,” intimated Mr. Darrell. He also said that his boys have put the Trinidad loss behind them and are coming into tonight’s game confidently.
Meanwhile, according to Wilson, patrons will not be allowed to leave the venue after entering and this he said is in keeping with rules that govern the sport internationally.
