Dear Editor,
It is an unfortunate incident that occurred a few days ago when it was alleged that a youngster gesticulated suggestively toward the President of Guyana.
What worries me is not just the alleged wrong done by this youngster, but the way adults are handling the matter.
If what is being reported is true then Guyana is in a bad way for sure. The expectation of mature adults is not to try to justify this sickening act but to try and correct this youth. Protesting with placards that seek to bring about exoneration and put a slant in print and walking in picket lines is to send the wrong message to our already wayward young people out there.
Hopefully my letter is not misinterpreted; I’d rather this young man benefits from the mercy of the court and be released into the custody of his parents, not be incarcerated. However, if this act of suggestive gesticulation had been made by someone of the opposite sex at our daughter(s) we as decent human beings would never accept this.
So people out there this not “just a finger” it is vulgar gesture that suggests something untoward and must not be encouraged at all.
And what is the definition of this “just a finger”? This same “just a finger” is used to indecently molest little girls and boys, this same “just a finger” is used to sexually harass our women folks.
Let’s look at it in another way. If the President had done the same thing would the protestors say it is “just a finger”? No. All and sundry would condemn his Excellency, so my friends what’s different?
Let us join together to help to create a new mind set in our youths, let us come together and volunteer our energies to reform our youths and some of our adults, let us not create monsters in the minds of our young giving them a false sense of decency, when they need to be corrected.
I am not a politician and will never be one, but acts like this one must be condemned by all.
Ivan John
