– father of two is recipient
By Latoya Giles
Another kidney transplant surgery was performed in Guyana on Wednesday, last, at the Balwant Singh Hospital in Georgetown. A father of two is the recipient.
Dr. Rahul Jindal, who spearheaded the entire operation, has deemed the surgery a major success.
The team comprised Dr Jindal, Dr Steven Guy, Dr Alden Doyle, Dr David Oliver, Dr Amit Verma, Dr Vineet Naja, Dr Aashish Chavan, Chelsea Guy and Mission Coordinator Lake Persaud.
Doctors say 37-year-old Mark David of Anna Catherina, a certified accountant by profession received a new kidney from his close friend Raymond Bacchus. Both men according to medical sources are on the road to a speedy recovery.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, David said that he has been given a new lease on life and is very thankful.
David said he started having kidney problems since 2006, with the organs failing in 2010. Dialysis treatment then started at the 5G centre in South Ruimveldt. David told Kaieteur News that he met with the medical team at the Balwant Singh Hospital as they were screening patients with kidney ailments. Kaieteur News was told that David’s father died due to renal failure and his brother was diagnosed when he was 11 years. David said his brother was willing to help but he was not a suitable candidate.
The patient stressed that he was very thankful to Philanthropist George Subraj, who has been the driving force behind the mission.
He also expressed appreciation for the staffers at the National Insurance Scheme, 5G Diaylsis Centre and Balwant Singh Hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that Dr. Jindal, who is employed by the Walter Reid Memorial Hospital, Washington DC, is on his ninth visit to Guyana to perform such a surgery. This is, however, the second being organised by President of the Zara Realty Holding Corporation, George Subraj. Subraj said that they just have the desire to help and that is where they get the motivation.
Subraj explained that the Ministry of Health has been very co-operative with the surgery, especially when it involved the supply of medication, and the Balwant Singh Hospital has been very receptive and helpful in facilitating the initiative.
He stated that the medication is free since it is supplied by the Government of Guyana, the patients would not pay the doctors, and even the Balwant Singh Hospital reduced its fees to facilitate more patients.
Dr. Jindal had earlier emphasised that patients need post-operation monitoring and it is essential that they receive adequate post-operative care since the medication supplied to them is for their lifetime, a life-long support medication.
Currently there are more patients being screened and with this surgery being successful, more emphasis will be placed on training the local doctors to “take over” after Dr. Jindal and his team would have completed surgeries.
