Dear Editor,
I call upon all Guyanese to not only denounce the political take-over of cricket in Guyana but we must go further than our denouncing. We must contact the West Indian Cricket Board and demand that they de-recognize the interim committee composed of politicians from the ruling party.
Nowhere in the world will the government’s take over of a sport be accepted by the general population. It is taboo in the international community. I fail to understand the ruling of the Chief Justice that because there is a Ministry of Sports the Government has to intervene.
The Chief Justice knows, and I repeat, he knows that FIFA will immediately ban Guyana from all forms of football if the Government of Guyana should take over football administration. Now what the Chief Justice must answer is if the same happens in football, would he make the same recommendation?
If his answer is yes then he knows that is the beginning of Guyana’s isolation in world soccer.
It must be the same for cricket. I want to stay on the Chief Justice’s recommendation. If the Chief Justice accepts that the Guyana Cricket Board has collapsed and there is no central authority, and the only pathway is for governmental intervention, then where does that leave the opposition and other stakeholders?
The concept of government is a wide process. It involves the people. When a government acts, it does so on behalf of the citizenry.
If the Guyana Government is going to fill the void left by the GCB, then using the sacred concept of government by the people, the interim committee must involve a wide sweep of stakeholders.
This means Frank Anthony has to invite the opposition, sports personalities, academics and the business community to be a part of the interim committee. He or the Government of Guyana cannot do it alone.
Having done so, Minister Anthony cannot head the interim body. This is the only solution to the problem at the moment. Nothing else should be acceptable to the West Indian Cricket Board
The interim committee headed by a politician who will soon be a candidate for the ruling party is nothing but disastrous. Do the Guyanese people feel that these politicians will be fair and independent? They haven’t been so for the nineteen years they have been in power. Who is so foolish to believe they will start now.
The Frank Anthony interim committee that is now in control of the administration of cricket is a further decline of the social fabric of this nation.
Check the names that will be on that transitory body and it will be all party people – party sycophants, party financiers, party kings. In an election that is imminent, cricket will now be used in the campaign. The only medium to stop this depravity is the West Indian Cricket Board.
I call upon the opposition parties to travel to Antigua, seek audience with the CEO, Mr. Hilaire and lobby for the eradication of this imposition. We let another manifestation of fascism go unprotested and we take another step in our own imprisonment. Once again, I urge all Guyanese to make urgent contact with the West Indian Cricket Board.
