The Neal and Massy Group of Companies launched the second edition of what has become its annual 10km Road Run yesterday with the Group’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Deo Persaud anticipating a greater success than the initial race last year.
“I am hoping that the event this year would be such a greater success that we would come back next year anticipating greater things. What we will try to do this year is broaden the scope of our participation and prizes,” Persaud said.
He was speaking at an official press conference to outline details of the event. In addition to the cash prizes and trophies, Persaud informed that food hampers detailing their products will be up for grabs following the race next Sunday.
“We want to foster and promote a fitter society where we can all contribute to the development of Guyana. Neal and Massy Group is glad to be a sponsor of this event and I see no reason why we should do it again next year,” Persaud noted.

President of the Neal and Massy Sports Club, Stuart May, who chaired the proceedings, stated that after last year’s success the event was something that Neal and Massy wanted to continue. He added that this year will be definitely bigger.
The top finisher in the junior category will get $30,000; second place $20,000, and third place $10,000. Trophies and a hamper will accompany all the cash prizes. The prizes are the same for the Masters’ category.
In the senior male and female group, the athletes will compete for a $50,000 first place prize that a trophy and hamper will support. The second place finisher will get $40,000 while third place is to get $30,000 along with the other gifts.
Senior Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Vice-President, Cornel Rose made it clear that a continuity of the event would augur well for the development of athletes in Guyana. He said that it would avoid athletes travelling for competitions.
“If we continue to have events such as these, we would prevent our athletes from travelling to the region to compete. We’re trying to get this race sanctioned at NACAC (North American, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association),” Rose divulged.
He urged all athletes, clubs and organisations to support the event. Cleveland Forde is defending male overall champion while Alika Morgan is the female champion. (Edison Jefford)
