Dear Editor,
As the news is filtering through that the Guyana Cricket Board will have an Interim Management Committee running its affairs while it reorganises itself, this is good news for cricket lovers who want to see its development.
This is said because the recently elected executive did not have any representative from Berbice who boycotted the election due to an apparent difference in opinion. That an association as large as the BCB did not take part in the GCB elections should have raised eyebrows that something was seriously wrong with the system.
Those individuals from the other associations who genuinely have the welfare of cricket in their interests should have taken note and forced a postponement of the elections unless Berbice was a part of it. Since the President has intervened and will be setting up an IMC, he is urged to ensure that Berbice is properly represented in any such committee.
He should also order an investigation into the main reason why the BCB pulled out of the original GCB elections in the first place. The answer may reveal a lot of what is wrong with our present cricket administration in this country.
For Berbice to have been left out of the administration of the GCB in the first place was rather selfish and self-centered by those who were eventually voted into office. BCB happens to be arguably the best run cricket association in Guyana. T
hey are very frequently in the news for all of the best reasons – sponsorship, tournaments, scholarships, community based self help activities etc. They should be a model to other organisations not one to be cast into the wilderness.
Even their decision to field a full-fledged Berbice team at the recent Jamzone T-20 while other teams imported international players showed their commitment to their cricket development.
That their team actually won was a truly inspirational story and they should be given full credit (it was disappointing that our press did not give this story more coverage) for having the courage to undertake such a decision knowing full well that if it had failed that they would have been subject to much criticism.
Our national cricket needs much vision, commitment and dedication for it to rejuvenate itself. We need not need look much further than the Berbice Cricket Board to see how much a fully functional and proactive organisation can do for the development of cricket.
So the president is urged to ensure that Berbice is properly represented on whatever IMC or new GCB is selected in the future. Our cricket development depends on the active involvement of this organisation.
