The Ministry of Tourism has developed a Number 63 Beach Redevelopment Vision which, when implemented, should enhance the shabby appearance and surroundings of Guyana’s premier beach.
The Number 63 Beach is the Caribbean’s longest stretch of beach with a unique hard surface on which driving can be done.
The planned initiative, which was launched at the recently held Berbice Expo and Trade Fair, will result in a more attractive and safer beach with more family- friendly activities. Some of the changes that would be immediately noticeable will be: life guards on duty to look out for the number of young children who frequent the beach ; lounge chairs and large umbrellas; an entertainment area with food courts, barb-b-que facilities; picnic- style benches, music; a large lot where every motorist will park and then walk through an entertainment area to go to the beach; and an area with a ferris-wheel, trampoline and wading pool.
The new initiative will also include a quiet religious zone, long boardwalk, Jet Ski rental, trampolines and beach shops and restaurants.
The Ministry hopes that “the Number 63 Beach will become the envy of other tourist destinations, especially the beach and creek facilities. It will be the example to follow in both the physical development and beautification, and the community partnership and cooperation aspects”.
The condition of the beach has deteriorated over a number of years. One of the major problems is the lack of an initiative to keep the beach clean in the face of indiscriminate littering and debris washed ashore with the tide. In addition, benabs and pavilions which were set up years ago are in a serious state of disrepair.
Mr Adrian Anamayah, chairman of a committee set up to maintain and upgrade facilities at the beach, said there is an arrangement for five full-time workers attached to the Drainage and Irrigation Authority to clean the beach. However, it appears that cleaning of the beach does not occur regularly.
Back in 2010, Anamayah told Kaieteur News that the committee plans to place garbage disposal bins along the beach and the No. 52-54 Neighbourhood Democratic Council has undertaken to clear the bins.
However, he said that it might be months before the bins, which are being donated, are put in place.
With regard to the dilapidated state of the benabs and pavilions, Anamayah said the committee simply does not have the funds to carry out repairs. He said that the committee hosts various activities to raise funds, but he said there is need for a more robust involvement of the Berbice business community.
It is hoped that the new strategy to enhance Number 63 Beach will open the community to tourism related business from residents across Guyana and overseas visitors.
