Six months after a Steering Committee was chosen to resuscitate the administration of table tennis in the Mining Town of Linden, a decision was taken by the body to hold elections for positions for officers on Wednesday at the Senior Supervisors’ Club (SSC) from 17:00hrs.
On February 28 this year at a Special Meeting at the SSC, Mr. Lethem Wilson called that conference where it was agreed that a new direction needs to be taken to uplift the sport, which had been dormant for some years, and at that meeting Mr. Wilson was chosen to spearhead that organization as its president and chairman.
The progress of this group is well known as the Guyana Table Tennis association approved of its existence in the short term and the Steering Committee was able to develop a number of training programmes, especially for Secondary School children, in the area.
In addition to this, Linden now has three internationally certified Level One coaches in Raynor ‘Copter’ Anderson, Howard James and Marlon Washington. Of the three, Anderson has also succeeded in attaining the Level Two certificate from the International Table Tennis Federation to be one of two so qualified in the country, with the other being national coach Linden Johnson.
Tournaments were also held during this period under review and visits were also made to Linden, to see the progress achieved by top ranking officials of the Guyana Table Tennis Association led by its president, Police Commissioner Henry Green.
On Wednesday, the various stakeholders in the sport in Linden will now elect officers to continue the administration of the game.
And incumbent chairman of the Linden Table Tennis Steering Committee over the past six months, Mr. Lethem Wilson, is satisfied that enough was done to put the sport on its footing for further development of the celluloid game in the town.
Organisations such as the Linden Secondary Schools, Senior and Mackenzie Sports Clubs, Linden Constabulary and the Linden Police Scouts are invited to attend this meeting.
