Dear Editor,
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Steve Merai has shown that he is not afraid in going after notorious criminals. Now, as a patriotic son of Guyana, he is not scared to reveal corrupt officers in the police force. Mr. Merai is fully aware that he may be subjected to dire consequences.
In the past, individuals who have exposed corruption have lost their jobs, were killed or migrated. I am hoping that Mr. Merai does not become a victim of foul play like Dr. Walter Rodney. Guyanese and the diplomatic corps should ensure that Mr. Merai is protected by trusted armoured guards. In the Middle East, foreign countries are helping the people in overthrowing dictatorial and corrupted regimes. Mr. Merai is also fighting against corruption and as such he needs protection.
Mr. Merai’s exposure of corruption reminds me of a fellow Berbician, the beloved Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who fought and won his battle against dictatorship and corruption. If we want to carry on the legacy of Dr. Jagan, then we need to support Mr. Merai and like-minded individuals in their efforts to bring corrupted individuals to justice.
If we are successful in eradicating corruption – a cancer in our society then the ballads of Dave Martin, Diana Chapman and Jessica Xavier would no longer be of the past but of the present of our beloved Guyana.
Our motto as Guyanese is one people, one nation, one destiny. If we adhere to this motto, we are invincible.
Dr. Sherlock Rawana
