Head of DeSinco, Frank DeAbreu is adamant that members of the corporate community have a moral obligation to support community oriented projects since these entities enjoy vast support from members of the society. Mr. DeAbreu was delivering remarks at the opening ceremony of the Georgetown Cricket Association U-13 cricket tournament scheduled to get underway from 09:30hrs this morning and concludes Saturday next.
The forum also served as the opening ceremony of a day/night hard court to facilitate practice sessions for the cricketers. The DeSinco boss feels that even though the cricketers are relatively young, cricket administrators should aspire to initiate similar programmes that support the development of younger participants. He posited an age as early as eleven. He also said that such a strategy would be of immense benefits especially since the youngsters would be at an impressionable age. He also issued timely advice to the youngsters, “Your attitude will determine your altitude and I wish to urge you to play as hard as you work since the balance would be of immense benefit to you.”
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony was also in attendance and lauded the input of DeSinco towards the youths’ development. He feels that such initiatives could serve as the catalyst to the advancement of the youngsters to higher accomplishments. The Minister closed with some timely advice, “You will find that your involvement in cricket will support your efforts in the field of education.”
Several other speakers complimented the initiative, while commending the input of DeSinco. They included Presidents of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Chetram Singh and the Georgetown Cricket Association, Roger Harper.
Mr. Singh noted the selflessness of head of the DeSinco Corporation, while pointing out that most corporate entities have lost the zest to support the longer version of the sport. “Everyone has an interest in 20/twenty cricket and are no
longer interested in supporting real cricket so naturally we are grateful for their input,” said Mr. Singh. He further extended the hope that other clubs would be positively affected to the extent of initiating similar programmes.
President of GYO, Khemraj Ramjattan, also delivered a stirring presentation in which he bemoaned the fact that cricket is being played in the law courts instead of on the field. He posited that the current tournament would serve as a factor that changes such thought processes.
Six teams will be vying for honours including the Gandhi Youth Organization A and B, the Georgetown Cricket Club, Malteenoes Cricket Club, Everest Cricket Club and the Demerara Cricket Club.
Three matches will be contested today, while all matches will comprise 25 overs per side and will be played at the GYO ground.
