-irate residents block gate
Irate residents from Sophia are taking a stand against persons who have been coming into the community with draglines and sand trucks to dig up the conservancy dams which prevent Sophia from flooding during heavy rainfall.
It is alleged by one resident that persons had already dug the dam on the southern side and had sold the earth for $14,000 per load. When Kaieteur News asked one of the contractors what the mud was being used for he hesitated and said that it was used to fill school yards. After he was confronted by another resident he decided to tell the truth.
“But we can’t pay people with tractors to dig and then give away the mud, we got to sell it”, Mr. Puran stated.
When Kaieteur News visited the area the residents had locked and guarded the gate that leads to the dam in an effort to block the sand truck from coming out of the dam with the mud.
Collin Carr, a resident of ‘A’ Field Sophia, said that when they came on the first occasion and started digging the dam on the opposite side, the draglines damaged the farmlands and caused the soil to sink in.
B. Puran, the chief contractor, told Kaieteur News that he ‘bought the dam’ from City Council.
“The last time we dig the land we give them money so is by we ain’t giving them none now they want try and stop we, but this time we ain’t got no money to give them cause we get permission from the Mayor and City Council.”
He also produced a document to prove that he had permission to remove earth from the dam.
The receipt was dated 10 May, 2011. This angered the residents more because they say that ever since the first dam was being dug that was the same receipt Mr. Puran produced.
“He can’t fool nobody here cause we know to read and write so don’t come with no bogus letter here. Before he tek out the letter out he pocket I could tell you what it say, so don’t let he come with that to we now”, one of the residents lamented.
Efforts to contact the Chief Engineer at the Mayor and City Council proved futile.
