Hosts Luncheon for contingent
By Edison Jefford
One of the largest corporate supporters of sports in Guyana, Digicel, yesterday lauded the efforts of the national Special Olympics team, which returned recently from the Summer Special Games in Athens, Greece, with one gold medal in the 25m backstroke.
Delroy Sookram swam his way into national history and International glory when he achieved an unprecedented feat in the 25m backstroke for Guyana. The country’s other representative, Coline Roberts, was 4th and 5th in the 25m backstroke and 50 freestyle events.
Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gregory Dean, lauded the efforts of the duo, who went to the Games with National Director of Special Olympics, Wilton Spencer among some others. It was an excellent experience for exposure, Dean supposed yesterday.
“I want to congratulate Delroy and Coline for their performances in Greece. It was a wonderful experience and we were happy to get involved. While you were there for the sport, we hope you had other experiences to tour and travel,” Digicel’s CEO briefly said.
The Games were held during June 24-July 4 and Spencer thanked Digicel for supporting them on their historic quest.
Spencer said that Digicel ensured that they participated at the highest level of competition for special athletes, and that, in itself, is remarkable.
“After one year of preparation, they have done Guyana proud. We know that Delroy and Coline did their best and while Coline did not get the results she wanted, we were still able to get one of the top performances at the competition from Delroy,” he said.
Spencer was invited to speak following Dean’s remarks. Digicel’s Public Relations Manager, Shonnet Moore chaired the formal session at the Luncheon. Events and Sponsorship Manager at Digicel, Gavin Hope and Marketing’s, Ramesh Rupchand was also in attendance along with some members from the National Special Olympics fraternity.
The Special Olympics Director said that while the activities in Athens kept the team busy, they were able to participate in the ‘Healthy Athletes Programme’ at the event, which was an occasion to ensure that all the special athletes are fit for sport.
Spencer thanked Stephanie Fraser for preparing the two athletes that participated over the last year. He said that it was a true national effort, adding that Digicel played a major role in ensuring that the tour was indeed a success.
