Collis King and Shaka Chase, who were charged with the offences of robbery under arms and assault, were each granted bail to the tune of $300,000 when they appeared Monday before Magistrate Hazel Octave Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates Court. They were not required to plead to the indictable matters.
King, 19, and Chase, 26, both of whom gave their address as 169 East Ruimveldt, heard that the police alleged that on July 29, at William Street, Kitty, being armed with a gun, they robbed Shawn Brian of one BlackBerry cellular phone, one wallet, two driver’s licences, one cap, and $12,000 in cash, a total value of $49,000.
It was further alleged that on the day of the incident, also at William Street, Kitty, they assaulted Sherlock D’Aguiar with intent to rob.
King, who was unrepresented, made a successful application for bail, as did Attorney at Law Adrian Thompson, who appeared for Chase. Thomson stated that his client received information about being wanted by the police, and had turned in himself the previous Tuesday. The lawyer indicated to the court that there was a breach of the 72-hour period that Chase could be detained.
Thompson emphasized that there was no confrontation and that his client was never placed on an identification parade.
No facts in relation to what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court. However, Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey stated that an oral confession was given by Chase. Harvey also mentioned that Chase is already before the court on an attempted murder charge.
The Prosecution objected to bail taking into consideration the seriousness of the offence.
The two men will make their next court appearance on October 18.
