Caribs walked away with the Bank DIH Rugby Seven’s trophy yesterday at the National Park, Rugby Ground after inflicting a 24-17 drubbing on the Guyana Defence Force to claim the title.
Hornets “A” and “B” were unable to score against GDF and the Caribs respectively in the semi-finals.
Leading the way for the Caribs and registering one tri with two successful conversions was the energetic Theo Henry. His counterpart Vallon Adams extended the lead as he added two tries into the eventually winners account. Walter George supported with one tri.
GDF managed to score three tries with a successful conversion against the dynamic Caribs.
In the preliminary round, Hornets A beat their B team 12-0, Caribs A defeated the GDF A 12-10, GDF B lost to Hornets B 7-12 and Hornets A overcame GDF B 24-5.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Rugby Football Union has listed their trial squad to participate in the High-Intensity Training Programme for the PAN-AM Sevens in Guadalajara, Mexico and the NACRA Championships in Barbados.
The fitness programme will be supervised by the Fitness Coach Barrington Brown and Head Coach Theo Henry. The squad consists of 37 players: (Forwards) Jason Tyrell, Walter George, Dwayne Schroeder, Avery Corbin, Dillon Downer, Richard Staglon, Jermaine Prowell, Vallon Adams and Manin Stephan; (Half-Backs) Ryan Gonsalves, Leon Greaves, Peabo Hamilton and Lance Adonis; (Backs) Ronald Mayers, Troy Bascom, Kevin McKenzie, Claudius Butts, Ryan Hinckson, Elwin Chase, Claude Alexander, Dominic Lespierre, Dane Parks, Rodwell Hutson, Rupert Giles, Blaise Bailey, Brian Walks, Kevin Joseph, Rickford Cummings, O’Neil Charles, Tristan Fraites, Danny Anderson, John Mars, Akeem Frazer, Carl Lewis and Kester Lowe. Players are asked to assemble in the National Park GYM today for training which commences at 4:30pm. (Juanita Hooper)
