27 years ago, June 1984, the Indian National Football team visited the land of the Mighty Kaieteur Falls and engaged the National Team in an International friendly at the World famous GCC ground.
The visitors deplaned the then Timehri International with overwhelming confidence courtesy of a 3-1 Victory over Caribbean Power House Trinidad and Tobago at their National Stadium in Port of Spain. So the Million dollar question being asked among Football fans was weather Lennox Arthur’s men could avenge the Trini battering and restore Caribbean Football pride.
But after a goalless first half, India under the Captaincy of Parminder Singh, were harbouring thoughts of another upset.
But Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite’s troops had no idea of surrendering. Coach Arthur started the second half with the artistic Western Tigers Julian Moe substituting Bunny Anthony. The debutant scored twice and set up the other goal for Terrence Archer as Guyana romped to an emphatic 3 nil victory giving Coach Arthur his first victory at the Senior International Level.
Strange enough, this was Arthur’s debut International assignment now 27 years later the word around camp GFF is that the boys from Delhi are heading back to the land of the majestic Kaieteur Falls and is determined to erase the June 1984 thrashing inflicted by Julian Moe, Terrence Archer and et al, only time will tell if there will depart like in 1984 thanks to Lennox Arthur’s stars 27 years ago.
