The Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) believes that if people are asked to pay for plastic bags there would be a reduction in the excessive use and wanton disposal of the items.
For this reason, the organization has requested via letter, the EPA, the Private Sector Commission, and the Consumer Association, to support its campaign to ban plastic bags distributed at Supermarkets and other shopping centres country wide.
It was observed, on many instances, that the plastic bags are not recycled; instead they are discarded into the environment.
“Plastics are very hazardous to birds, marine life, and the general environment. Discarded plastic is not biodegradable and it lingers in the environment for thousands of years. The environment is affected with used plastic bags that end up in drains and other water ways; hindering the flow of those canals. If these plastics are burnt they infuse the air with toxic fumes. All things considered, plastic creates a serious public health nuisance and harm the environment in many different ways,” the entity stressed in a press release.
It continued: “The current garbage crises in the city reveal that citizens are using plastic excessively and thus it showcases the indisciplined attitude of some citizens towards the disposal of refuse. This has changed the kind of garbage generated and facilitates a deficit by the authorities to actually cope with this kind of garbage. “A ban on free plastic bags could assist this situation and simultaneously make available a reference that would consent to corporations, consumers, and citizens to reflect on their attitude towards the environment.”
