A fire of unknown origin has struck again this time leaving a family of four from Better Hope, East Coast of Demerara, homeless.
Some time around 10:30 hours yesterday the blaze broke out at a building, located at lot 39 Better Hope South and which housed two apartments. At the time of the fire no one was at home. The four occupants– a mother, her husband and two adult daughters were out at the time.
One of the occupants, Annette Damasar, told this publication that she left her home early yesterday morning for work. Her mother was at home. She added that before she left she ensured that everything was unplugged, except for a refrigerator.
“We does mek sure we plug out everything. Not long after I leave home my mother left and everything de alright.”
The woman added that around 11:00 hours a resident of the area called at her work place to inform her that her house was on fire.
“When I reach home I see everything gone. Wheh me live all meh life gone up in flames. We ain’t get to save anything,”
According to Damasar, her stepfather’s car which was also parked under the house was totally destroyed. The woman said that her family lived at the house for close to 47 years.
Meanwhile, residents of the area expressed their concern over the tardy response by the Guyana Fire Service. This publication was told that the service took a while to response. One resident said that after persons spotted the fire a bucket brigade was formed but that was not enough to quench the fire.
Only Wednesday, last a house was totally destroyed by fire at Hague, West Coast Demerara. That fire left four persons homeless. The cause of that fire is yet to be determined.
