Dear Editor,
Parents have a huge impact on the lives of their children either positively or negatively. However, they should not have a say on who their children vote for in the coming elections.
Young voters should be fully aware of the background of the political parties and the presidential candidates, their good, bad and ugly. Either they conduct their own research or are educated by their parents but ultimately it’s their decision to make and not their parents.
Their decision shouldn’t be based on the fact that past generations and their parents have voted for that particular party at every election.
The 2011 election will see a large number of first time voters and the person they vote for will either help move Guyana forward or have the country remain in its current state.
Late yesterday afternoon at the South Ruimveldt Park a few individuals found it necessary to educate persons in an informal way by a stage play, which touched on a few issues such as parents having an influence on who their kids should vote for.
They made it clear in an entertaining way that this should not be. The first time voter’s choice should be of free will.
Most of the actors were young people and it was impressive on how large a crowd they drew to educate person of all ages.
There should be similar initiatives through out the country to inform Guyanese.
