Chandra Lall Veerapen, 31, of East Canefield East Canje, was on Wednesday sentenced to one year in jail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court and was found guilty on a charge of possession of narcotics.
Prosecutor Corporal Sherlock King said that on Thursday February 10, the accused went to the Rose Hall Estate Compound to pick up scrap iron.
He was subsequently seen by the guards in the compound, and was challenged and arrested.
The police were called to the Rose Hall Estate to investigate a case of possible simple Larceny.
As police and security officials were going towards the area where the offence was allegedly being committed, they noticed Veerapen taking a brownish paper parcel from his pocket and throwing it away.
The parcel was retrieved and a white rock like substance was found inside. The man was arrested and taken to the Reliance police station where the contents were tested and weighed and was found to be one gram of cocaine.
