The new innovative, exciting and enjoyable FastBall Football, the brainchild of GT&T CEO Yog Mahadeo has taken Guyana by storm in the few short weeks it has been introduced.
While it is a narrowed down version of regular football, the spicy rules that goes along with this 30 minute version of the world’s greatest sport has been mastered by some of the teams that have made it to the round-of-32 and even to the quarterfinals.
Games have been played countrywide and fans as well as players have voiced their satisfaction that FastBall has really taken them by storm despite not being too hot about it before it started.
Well, many would have harboured thoughts that the traditional club teams would have been the more dominant combinations and to an extent that has been the case. However, many non-traditional teams have also made their mark and have proven that once you master the rules of the game, you can take away the top prize of One Million Dollars that will go to the winner come this Sunday evening at the Providence Stadium when the grand finale is contested.
One of the teams that have captured the attention of all is the Daddy’s Enterprise side, one of three East Coast teams still standing but their further progress as well as the other East Coast teams would have been decided last evening when the final four round-of-16 games were played at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
Daddy’s Enterprise is predominantly made up of Under-23 players from the Golden Stars Club with a mere two players over the age of 23.
They have defeated all the teams that came in their path to date including the highly fancied Cougars Retrievers of Berbice in their round-of-32 encounter at the BV Community Ground on Friday last which earned them a date with Adam’s Rockers of Linden in the round-of-16 last evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
Speaking with this reporter, Captain of the team Owen Adonis said that they are quietly optimistic that they have what it takes to go all the way. He said that when the tournament was advertised they felt that they capable of taking part but never thought that they would have reached this far.
“But we are here now and are all positive but not over confident that we can deliver as we have been doing in the past games given the fact that this is a knock-out competition.”
The 18-year-old Adonis speaking on what was the motivation of competing in the tournament had this to say: “As a young team with just two older players, we wanted to show our fellow youths not only in the East Coast but countrywide that young people can excel providing they are committed, disciplined and work hard. We have been hard at training under our Coach Andrew Clements and as I said we will be taking it one game at a time going forward.”
Adonis, who also runs the 100 and 200 Meters for Police Sports, informed that apart from Les Charles Critchlow, who has represented Guyana at the junior and senior levels, no other player has national experience and it would also be the debut for most of the players at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
He has competed in athletics at this venue and expressed optimism that they have what it takes to be victorious against the home team Adam’s Rockers.
Adonis expressed gratitude to GT&T’s CEO Mr. Yog Mahadeo for making such a brilliant idea reality and for also allowing so many teams nationwide (207) the opportunity to play. He also thanked the team sponsor Daddy’s Enterprise and its Owner Victor Solomon for supporting and providing the needs of the team which has enabled them to deliver the goods.
“Our game plan for this game is to play as a unit and just to do our best.” Their leading goal scorer Seon Austin who has 4 to date will be focused on hitting the back of the nets once again in taking his side to victory and a place in the quarterfinals set for tomorrow at the GFC.
