Regional U-19 three-day cricket (4th round)
By Sean Devers
Heavy unseasonal rain in Georgetown continues to adversely affect this year’s Regional under-19 three-day cricket tournament in Guyana with the first day of all three fourth round matches being washed out without a ball being bowled yesterday.
Leaders Jamaica, hunting their first title since 2009, were scheduled to face the Leeward Islands at Everest but Dominican Umpire Erickson Degalerie and his Guyanese counterpart Guyanese Gyanandad Sukhdeo called off proceedings at 14:20hrs.
At DCC where second placed Trinidad and Tobago were set to face Barbados, Umpires Francuis Maurice from St Lucia and Guyana’s Nandkumar Shivsankar deemed the outfield unfit for play by Lunch.
At the historic Bourda, no longer used for International cricket due to the construction of the National Stadium at Providence for the 2007 World Cup, was the worst affected of the fourth round venues with most of the outfield under water.
Guyanese Umpires Colin Alfred & Shannon Crawford called off play early in the first session at Bourda where host Guyana, desperate to rebound from their fourth position were set to oppose defending champions Windward Islands who are just .6 points ahead of cellar dwellers Leeward Islands who are on 6.7 points.
The sun came out brightly just after lunch before more showers in the afternoon drenched the City and prospects of any play today on the second day seems remote.
July and August is usually the driest time of the year in Guyana but in 1992 when Guyana won the first of their six consecutive titles, the rain poured and the only outright win achieved was in the final round when Guyana bowled out the Leewards for 84 and 64 to win by 208 runs to claim the title.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored the only century that year when he made 130 against T&T in the opening round as T&T with four no-results and Guyana with three, were the hardest hit of the teams by weather that year.
The last time a regional under-19 tournament was played in Guyana was in 2006 but the worst hit tournament by rain was in 1998 in Trinidad when the entire three-day competition had to be called off and the first ever Regional under-19 One-Day competition was staged to give the players an opportunity to play some cricket.
Jamaica won that 1998 tournament to become the first limited overs champions and if the fourth round of this year’s three-day competition ends in no-results, the Jamaicans who play the Windwards in the final round, stand a great chance of taking Championship honours.
This year’s one-day competition is scheduled to commence on August 9.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
