The garbage issue currently affecting many persons in Georgetown will soon be addressed. The Mayor and City Council (MCC) stated that it has decided to tackle this prevalent problem.
According to a press release from the MCC, the organization has acquired two new Packer trucks to assist in its solid waste management programme.
These will begin work on Monday in different communities. Another two trucks are expected shortly.
Kaieteur News understands that late last year, the MCC took a decision to review its arrangement with its garbage collection contractors, and to incrementally restart collecting garbage in certain wards of the city.
This was against the background that council was and remains “strapped for cash” while contractors were finding it difficult to continue working without timely payments.
After this, the MCC then decided that it would be a good thing to review collection contracts and begin collecting the city’s waste, using its own trucks.
It was apparent that this course of action would be more economical and in the control of the municipality if it were to begin handling its own collection.
As a result, there was a proposal by the Solid Waste Management Department that was approved to haul garbage from certain wards using council vehicles and the procurement of collection vehicles.
This is another effort by the council to secure the health and safety of the City of Georgetown.
However, according to the Department of Solid Waste, there is likely to be some changes in the collection schedule from Monday.
These will be communicated to citizens through the media.
It must be noted that the MCC continues to appeal to all citizens to adhere to good environmental practices and avoid illegal dumping of garbage on parapets and in street drains. (Kristen Macklingam and Rehana Ahmad)
