it was a colourful and involved crowd with four more pulsating matches when round-of-32 action in the inaugural GT&T FastBall knock-out football competition continued at the BV Community Ground on Wednesday evening.
It was not a good night for the three Berbice teams as they were all sent packing form the tournament, all four East Coast teams advancing to the round-of-16 on a night where the home teams reigned supreme.
Much was expected from Port Kaituma in their clash against Golden Stars; they did prove that they can be a force to reckon with but their effectiveness in the attacking third was sorely lacking in a game that it has to be spot on. They ended up losing the battle by the lone goal of the game which came from a six second penalty that was converted by Captain of Golden Stars, Carlos Kingston.
All four matches on the night were keenly contested affairs and provided the kind of entertainment that had the fans wanting for more when the dust was settled.
Playing on their home ground in the feature match of the night, BV Triumph United A had to pull out all the stops to turn back the challenge of Hearts of Oak, a Masters side from the Ancient County.
So fierce was the battle that the home team scored the winner in the 4th minute of play, Rayon Hopkinson doing the honours by rocking the nets. The goal sent the crowd into a frenzy and they would have loved to see their boys bursting the nets again but the veteran boys were able to keep them out of the danger zone.
Hearts of Oak made some enterprising runs at their younger challengers but could not find the back of the nets.
Daddy’s Enterprise, one of the younger sides in the competition, sent another Berbice side packing as they won the clash 1-0 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie in regulation time.
Daddy’s Enterprise had taken the lead in the 1st minute of play through Seon Austin’s strike and did well to defend that advantage almost to the end but Cougars rebounded with 3 minutes to game time to stitch in the equalizer when Kelvin Joseph scored.
The Berbice side had the opportunity to draw level since the first half of play but missed the six second penalty that they were awarded.
Daddy’s Enterprise goalkeeper Lloyd Daniels made all the difference for his team in securing their spot in the round-of-16 by saving both shots by Cougars from the penalty spot.
Setting the winning tone for the East Coast teams on Wednesday night was Ann’s Grove which thumped Monedderlust 2-0; again an early goal set the foundation for the win. Nkose Denny in the 2nd and Antonio Jackson in the 25th were the players on target for Ann’s Grove.
More round-of-32 action will be played today, this time the Georgetown Football Club Ground will be the centre for all the action; four more teams will secure their spots in the round-of-16.
Lethem oppose Broad Street in the first game from 18:00hrs, BK International Western Tigers A play Cool Runnings of Linden, Reggae Boyz face Adam’s Rockers with the main game of the night between Pele Gold and Potaro Strikers.
Action will move to the Den Amstel Ground tomorrow evening and back at the GFC on Sunday night.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
