One man is dead and another in a critical condition following a motor vehicular accident at Mahdia on Saturday.
According to reports out of the area, 24 year-old Awad Narine Harrichand died almost instantly after an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) which he was driving collided head on with another vehicle. Another man identified as Shawn Lawrence, 18, was seriously injured.
This publication was told that the incident occurred sometime around 18:00 hours while the men were heading into Princeville. There are also reports that the men were negotiating a turn at a very fast rate when they ended up in the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Police said that the ATV was unregistered.
Both Harrichand and Lawrence were rushed to the Mahdia Hospital where Harrichand was pronounced dead on arrival. Lawrence was treated and subsequently air dashed to the city. Kaieteur News was told that he suffered severe head injuries.
Up to press time yesterday Lawrence was said to be in a critical condition and was receiving treatment at a city Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Meanwhile this accident has now added to the country’s climbing road fatality figures. Already for the years road accidents have claimed the lives of 69 persons as compared to 62 for the same period last year.
The most recent accident occurred two Mondays ago, on Homestretch Avenue, when Coretta Benjamin, Crazel Paul, Ericka La Cruz, Junior Duncan and Peter Mc Lennan perished after the minibus they were traveling in suffered a blowout and overturned.
