Benn among six WI players in GT team
By Sean Devers
Thirty-year-old West Indies left-arm spinner Suleiman Benn was the leading West Indian bowler in last year’s home series against South Africa but he has not featured in the Regional side since the World Cup due to what the WICB described as a bad World Cup report.
The towering left-arm spinner recently collected a seven-wicket haul for his Club Spartan in Barbados’s first division cricket and is keen to get back into the regional team.
With 51 wickets from 17 Tests and 25 ODIs and 17 T20 Internationals under his belt Benn is one of the more experienced spinners in the West Indies.
The lanky Test cricketer who has three five-wicket hauls in Test matches made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2008 at the Providence Stadium when the venue hosted its inaugural Test and he now returns to that venue for the Jam Zone Masters Cup T20 competition on August 12 and 14.
Benn has been included in the Georgetown Pitbulls squad which will be led by former West Indies Captain Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan and which also includes Trinidadians Keiron Pollard and Navin Stuart along with Jamaican left-arm pacer Krishmar Santokie.
Guyana’s latest West Indies cricketer Christopher Barnwell, former Test opener Travis Dowlin and Deon Ferrier who was a member of Guyana’s historic 2006 Stanford championship side, are also in the strong City side.
The Hits & Jams Super stars is expected to be named this week after their final round of trials but with the pugnacious Chris Gayle, energetic West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, all-rounder Andre Russell and Danza Hyatt in their lineup, plenty of fireworks can be expected in the four-team competition.
Defending national t20 champions Berbice, with Test cricket’s latest spin bowling find Davendra Bishoo and West Indies players Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Jonathon Foo in their line-up is expected to have a large following from the Ancient county while New Line Cavaliers who are slated to include West Indies opener Lendl Simmons and Ryad Emrit in their side is the other team involved.
Two matches with be played on August 12 at 17:00hrs and 21:00hrs respectively under lights at Providence to kick off the annual Jam Zone Summer break 2011 organized by top local promotion group Hits and Jams Entertainment.
Another two matches, including the grand final, are scheduled for the same times and venue on August 14 and the official launching of the competition will be done on Monday July 25 at the office of the Minister of Youth Sport and Culture.
The competition is sanctioned by the Guyana Cricket Board and a GCB representative, Hits and Jams Entertainment, Captains of the teams and Guyana’s Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony are all expected to be present at the launching.
