The Argentine Navy Sail Training Ship “Libertad” is now en route to Venezuela as it continues its historic voyage around South America after spending a three-day sojourn in Guyana.
On Monday evening, the captain and crew were treated to a grand reception hosted at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, by Minister Luis Martino, Charge d’Affaires, Embassy of Argentina.
According to the Captain, Guillermo Cyburec, on June 19, 1963, the ship set sail on her maiden voyage. Guyana was listed as part of its 42nd training voyage.
These training voyages contribute to fostering international naval relations and strengthening professional and friendly bonds with foreign navies.
In advancing diplomatic ties with Guyana, this trip was described as a priority, with a mission to promote peace and solidarity between the two countries.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, stated that the timely visit coincides with the 2011 Pro Tempore Presidency of Guyana at the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).
She also remarked that the re-opening of the Argentine Embassy in Guyana after 20 years is a significant step to strengthening and deepening the bilateral relations between Guyana and Argentina, as well as integration in South America through mutual membership of UNASUR.
Minister Luis Martino stated that he was pleased with Guyana’s response and the country’s assistance in guiding the process of the reopening of an Argentine Mission.
The contingent aboard the “Libertad” also consists of 25 females, including the first female crewmember to have graduated from the Argentine Naval Academy, as well as cadets from Brazil, Chile, Panama, Uruguay and Paraguay.
