… says IMC Chairman
As Rose Hall Town vendors continue to vend on the road shoulders, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairman, Bhadenauth Somrah, has said that a lot of revenue is being lost daily.
He stated that a mark-off point next to Bobby and Sons store was established on the market since the council realized that all of the vendors could not be accommodated inside the municipal market. But “things have got out of hand” and have resulted in more than 50 vendors setting up stalls beyond the mark-off point.
Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, after receiving complaints from roadside vendors in the area, visited the market in June and instructed the vendors to remain on the road shoulders.
The IMC had previously dismantled some stalls. A clash between the Regional officials and the IMC Chairman ensued. The vendors insisted that the Regional Chairman gave them permission to sell on the road shoulders.
In response, the IMC Chairman questioned the legitimacy of the regional administration to pry into the town’s business.
A week later, the vendors inside the market staged a protest against the roadside vendors taking away the business. Those operating inside the market said that they lost business and sustained heavy financial losses.
The Minister of Local Government was supposed to visit the area to make a pronouncement on the matter but no such thing has happened since.
Somrah, on Monday, said that “a few goldsmiths vending on the road have been causing these problems”. He said the persons “creating the problems” are not from the town.
“The market was in order. Everything was going fine. The Regional Chairman came in the town and tell the people to go back on the road and sell. That kind of thing, I don’t condone. I’m losing revenues.” he stated.
He said that the situation on the road “is more chaotic” at the moment and that the council still has to find money to clean the road.
The IMC is collecting just over $200 as a cleaning fee from each roadside vendor. The market vendors pay $140 per day. Somrah said that vendors will find that it is cheaper to sell in the market than on the roadside.
Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha stated that he is no longer involved in the matter and that the Minister of Local Government will visit Berbice shortly to make a final pronouncement on the matter.
