The Mayor and City Council would be meeting delinquent taxpayers (worst cases identified) soon to discuss the payment of outstanding taxes, says Mayor Hamilton Green, at a press briefing yesterday.
Mayor Green stressed that owing to the non-payment of taxes by businesses and individuals, the Council is having difficulties accumulating monies to pay staff and private contactors for garbage disposal services.
He said that the Council owes about $60M to private contractors for the disposal of garbage. It is anticipated that if the Council receives sufficient taxes contractors could expect part-payment this week.
Mayor Green emphasized that the financial situation of the Council is also affecting the operations of private contractors.
One of the private contractors revealed that the Council owes the entity in excess of $25M for services provided in the last week of February and the following months: March, April, May, and June.
It was noted that during the recent strike the Council paid the company $12M and requested that it commence services.
The contractor added that continuous late payments by the Council are affecting the company financially.
