The Guyana contingent that will compete at the July 17-30 Games of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) in Venezuela will leave Guyana today on a chartered flight to participate in the event for the first time in history.
Guyana will compete in Track and Field, Boxing, Cycling, Karate and Table Tennis at the Event and Kaieteur Sport presents the respective representative teams that were initially sent in to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for the historic tour.
Mr. Hugh Denbow was identified as the Chef-de-Mission. Wendy Doris is Manager of Track and Field with Julian Edmonds, who was National Coach at the CARIFTA Games, Coaching the side from athletics that include ten athletes, three females and seven males.
Track and Field: (Females) Natasha Alder (Field Events), Alisha Fortune (100m, 200m) Ashanti Scott (Distance Events); (Males) Chavez Ageday (100m, 200m), Quinse Clarke (100m, 200m), Wayne Harlequin (400m, 800m), Dennis Horatio (800m, 1500m, 5000m), Patrick King (200m, 400m) Ronald Payne (Field Events) and Cleveland Thomas (800m, 1500m).
The Athletics Association of Guyana was expected to lobby to have Rupert Perry (100m, 200m) and Winston George (100m, 200m) included in the track and field team after both athletes were denied US visas to compete at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Puerto Rico. However, Kaieteur Sport could not ascertain up to press time if the athletes managed to get on the historic ALBA team to compete in Venezuela.
Boxing: Sheridan Thomas, Romona Agard, Imran Khan, Markember Pierre, Samuel Primo, Ron Smith, Stephan Gouveia and Bert Braithwaite. Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) President, Steve Ninvalle had told this newspaper at a press conference to disclose the respective teams two weeks ago that all his charges are on the ‘Road to London’ training programme ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Ninvalle said that the boxers are well prepared with Gouveia and Braithwaite returning only last weekend from the Pan American Games.
Cycling: Veteran cycling coach, Hassan Mohamed, who will perform duties as an assistant Chef-de-Mission to Denbow will lead Alonzo Greaves and Enzo Mathews on the tour. The cyclists are among Guyana’s most experienced and should do well.
Karate: Nalisha Shariff, Keith Beaton, Patrick Cheeks, Nathalie Gibson, Kyle Isaacs and Roger Peroune were the names submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to represent the country in the sport at the ALBA Games.
Table Tennis: Nigel Bryan, Edinho Lewis, Christopher Franklin, Paul Meusa and Joel Alleyne were named on that team. The ALBA Games is being held for a fourth time and Guyana wants to make a strong debut performance with a strong contingent.
