The driver who said that he was given $1M to set up a heist, and his suspected partner in crime were yesterday remanded on the robbery charge. The charge was indictable and they were not required to plead.
When Mark Worrell, the driver and accomplice Aman Lallchan appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court they were told that the police are saying that while armed with a gun on July 1 at Lombard Street, they robbed Dennis Abrams of $9M in cash and 10 cheque leaves worth $300,000, the property of Courts Furniture Store.
They also robbed Abrams of one .32 Taurus revolver valued $120,000 and six .32 rounds of ammunition, property of RK Guyana security service.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that Worrell and Abrams, about 17:45 hours, had just collected several cash deposits from the Courts branches at Grove, East Bank Demerara and Parika.
Worrell, the driver and Abrams, the armed guard, were proceeding along Lombard Street when they were forced to slow down due to heavy traffic.
Pindar stated that two gunmen came up to the vehicle and pointing a gun in the direction of the two, then forced them to hand over the money.
They then made good their escape with a car that was waiting for them.
The court heard that Worrell confessed to have conspired with the two gunmen to commit the crime. He also reportedly handed over his share of the loot, and then led the investigators to his accomplice’s Berbice hideout at Number50 Village, Corentyne.
The court was then told that while all the money was recovered, the firearm and ammunition are still missing.
The Prosecution objected to bail citing the seriousness of the offence.
The two are expected to make their next court appearance on July 25.
