Gladstone James, who was charged with possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was remanded.
James, on July 3, at Mariparu in the North West District, allegedly had in his possession one 12-gauge shotgun with five matching cartridges while he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that police ranks were on patrol in the Mariparu backdam when they entered James’s mining camp. Pindar stated that the ranks conducted a search and discovered the 12-gauge shotgun along with five matching cartridges hidden under a piece of wood.
The defendant, according to the prosecutor, confessed to ownership and was subsequently arrested and charged.
Attorney at Law Adrian Thomson, who is representing James, told the court that the gun and the ammunition were found in a camp nearby. Mr. Thomson declared that three persons were apprehended by the police and two of them were released on station bail, leaving his client in police custody. Mr. Thomson also informed the court that his client was assisting the police with their investigation by helping them to locate the owner of the said articles. This owner was not present in the camp at the time the gun and ammunitions were found.
The matter has been transferred to Matthews Ridge Magistrates’ Court and will be heard again on August 2, next.
