President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, DSS, DSM, has responded to a Kaieteur Sport article. The GTTA Boss was unhappy with the vein and taste of the article and what it implied.
Here is the full text of Mr. Greene’s response:
“This morning, Friday July 08, 2011, as I opened the Kaieteur News Newspaper I was stunned by an article under the caption “Disconcert of senior table tennis players” by Edison Jefford and I wondered if it was the same reporter who is always at table tennis events and who saw me unto Monday July 04, 2011, at the National Gymnasium.
Initially I was struck by the unprofessional journalism. He wrote an article and did not seek to access a response from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Executive or myself. Surprisingly Mr. Jefford raises an issue which has been of concern to the GTTA Executive, that is, the lack of preparation by senior players.
The Senior Caribbean Championships is held yearly from time immemorial and Guyana participated unto 2009. When I played table tennis at the highest level I used to keep myself fit and train daily for local events because I loved the game. It is the responsibility of any dedicated senior player of Guyana to keep himself fit and in readiness for competition whether locally or against foreigners.
The reporter in his haste to lambast the current Executive Body of the Association has failed to take cognisance of the fact that we took over in August 2010 empty financial records, no audited financial statement, no strategic plan, an outdated constitution, and no standard requirement for the selection or grading of players.
Our task therefore was to put our house in order and provide as much incentives and competition to encourage and motivate players to play the game, attract new entrants into the sport and spread it throughout Guyana. Charity begins at home. Obviously Mr. Jefford has been persuaded to think otherwise.
The GTTA will not be swayed by a few players with personal grouses and will continue to motivate those who want to play for the love of the game to the best of our ability.
Our current efforts at improving our quality of play include training in China and a request for a Chinese Coach amongst other efforts.
The anonymous disconcerted bunch are free moral agents to do as they please.
The GTTA will work with those who love the game and are dedicated to the game and country.”
