– they say them will poison me and throw thing inside my food if I say anything”
Allegations of mismanagement, corruption and theft at the East La Penitence night shelter have surfaced after one of its occupants made allegations of poisoning and constantly being beaten for her personal belongings and decided to vent her frustrations.
The 28-year-old woman said that after visiting the La Penitence Police Station yesterday to file a complaint she was chased. She then visited Brickdam Police station with her complaint to no avail.
According to Anniesa Bascom, after her mother died she has been living at the East La Penitence night shelter for the past three years and has encountered tremendous problems with workers of the institution who are bullies. She also keep experiencing problems with some of the occupants.
“They beating me because I does get my public assistance and don’t want to spend anything or give anything to anybody, when I got credit in my phone they does bully me to use it. When I get my stuff they always want and when I don’t want give or buy anything they does want to beat me. This happens all the time I am now fed up. Let Minister Manickchand know what going on,” Bascom lamented.
“They say I don’t want to give away my thing, and I does keep it away from all of them, they does get vex and want to beat me,” she said.
She said that yesterday she visited the Ministry of Human Service and made a complaint. However it appeared as if the complaint was not taken seriously.
She also disclosed that the workers who are paid a monthly salary would normally bully occupants of the night shelter to do their jobs of cleaning and the like.
Ms Bascom said, “When the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Human Service send thing for the shelter they fetching it out for themselves, and who isn’t taking it home selling it out. This thing happening long now and we can’t say nothing because they does want to bully you.”
Ms Bascom explained that she likes to keep to herself and it appears as if some of the workers and occupants want to take advantage of her quiet nature. “I want Minister Manickchand to know that the snack and other stuff that people donate to the shelter we don’t get any and they just taking everything for themselves, the food is horrible when they done boil it got a set of water inside, these people don’t care. -”They say them will poison me and throw thing inside my food if I say anything…One name Daphanie does fetch out the food stuff every afternoon.”
