A fire of unknown origin destroyed a two- storey house at Lot 158 Dr Tulsi Street, Williamsburg, Corentyne, Tuesday evening, leaving only a frame and resulting in six persons being homeless. All that remained were a few burnt boards and some zinc sheets.
According to Renita Sukra, the entire family was attending a religious function at Port Mourant when one of them received a call from a friend about 21:30 hrs that their home was on fire. The home was not insured.
By the time they arrived the flames were raging.
Sukra, her husband Kawaldeo Persaud, and four children, Steve, Leon, Shivanie and Darshanie are now homeless. Losses include furniture, three beds, school textbooks, birth certificates and other documents, and “expensive Indian clothing”, which according to Sukra amounted to over $1M.
She is not employed but her husband is self- employed.
“They didn’t have water. It took too long for them to get water by the trench. The hose and so didn’t work properly,” Sukra said. She noted that the home never had electricity and no lamp was left on.
“We need help. We ain’t get no saving or anything; what little we had, everything burned,” she said. In the meantime, they are staying with relatives at Williamsburg.
According to neighbours, the fire started about 21:00 hrs and it took “a long time” before the fire tender from the new Rose Hall Town Fire Station arrived. That fire station is located about four minutes from the home.
