Dear Editor,
On Saturday 18th June I saw a part of the Programme “Law Enforcement and You” on NCN Television which was comprised of a panel headed by Commander Vyphius and other officers of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
In responding to and addressing the question of conduct (how policemen/women ought to behave towards citizens), Commander Vyphius said that he was very much concerned about the mannerisms of some members of the Force; that he personally, at all times – without fail – tries to instill in each and every new recruit who passes through him, and whenever he has to address them, the importance of being courteous.
Good manners, he stressed, should be the hallmark of the GPF – be respectful, be polite to an individual though you may have to charge them. I totally endorse this comment and am quite sure that this is what the general public would like to see too. But, unfortunately, it is either that Commander Vyphius had a very small number of recruits who were under his charge that he schooled, or if not, then they have neglected his teachings/instructions in this regard.
Commander Vyphius doesn’t have to go anywhere for proof nor does he need any lesson on the general conduct of the many new recruits, it is so palpably overwhelming.
The public bears witness everyday to this unruly, uncouth, lewd, disrespectful, disgusting and commonplace behaviour that has come to exemplify the GPF – their trademark- with the exception of a precious few that can be considered negligible (especially those wearing black, who drive around in open back pick-ups)
It is regrettable that such a civil lesson has fallen on deaf ears and is not heeded. I have grown plenty weary of seeing TV programmes of various organizations/ institutions, outlining and saying great things about how they operate and their good intentions, when in fact it is nothing of the sort when you come in contact with them.
One good thing about the programme, is that it is good for the public to hear what is expected from members of the GPF – all the beautiful service that should be meted out to them.
