Winston Lewis, the father of Jayo Lewis, the infant who was electrocuted on Wednesday at his parents’ Mai Mai Dam, Angoy’s Avenue residence in New Amsterdam, remains in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the child’s demise.
Both the Police Force and the Guyana Power and Light are conducting probes.
The deceased two-year-old, who was the sixth of seven children, was at home when some sweets which were in the possession of some other siblings fell in the yard. The infant went to retrieve same, and came in contact with some live electrical wires that were running through the yard. The wires were reportedly supplying electricity to the Lewis’ home and other residences nearby.
It is understood that one of the other children, upon seeing the toddler lying on the ground, called out to their mother to “come and see Jayo playing dead pun we”. The mother came out and found the child motionless on the ground. The child’s father is a hand cart operator who plies his trade mostly in the New Amsterdam market and other areas in the town. His wife, Florien, is a housewife. They were both inconsolable after the reality of what had occurred sunk in.
The distraught father upon arriving home hugged the motionless body of his child and rushed him to the New Amsterdam hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Both parents denied knowledge of the illegal electricity connections.
Angoy’s Avenue is one of the high risk squatting areas which have been neglected by the authorities. Most residents obtain electricity through illegal connections, using telephone wires and other means. GPL seems helpless in stopping or curbing the practice.
