5th Republic Bank Summer Classes set
The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) during the month of July would be hosting its 14th Annual Cricket Academy at the Area ‘H’ Ground as part of the entity’s Cricket Development Programme. The Club would also be hosting the 5th Annual Republic Bank Summer Classes Programme at its Head Office.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster disclosed that the Summer Classes would start on the July 11, and would last for six weeks.
The classes would be for Sixty (60) Grade 6 students who would be attending Secondary School for the first time in September and would be conducted by Mr. Rohan Etwaru of the Port Mourant Secondary School.
The main aims of the classes are to assist the students to make a successful transition from Primary to Secondary, to promote the ‘Say No to Drugs and Yes to Education’ message and to promote sports as an alternative to a life on the road.
Students, Foster said would also do Mathematics, English, Integrated Science and Social Studies while lectures on topics of importance to them will also take place. Basic coaching in sporting disciplines including cricket, basketball and volleyball is also ear marked.
The 14th Annual Cricket Academy is set to commence on the July 18 and last for two weeks. Foster said that a total of 120 young cricketers both male and female will make up the Academy which would be coordinated by the club’s Cricket Development and Public Relations Department.
Academy Director is Patrick Lewis while the coaching staff includes Julian Moore, Winston Smith, Renwick Batson, Delbert Hicks and Ravi Narine.
The Club is urging young cricketers from all across the Ancient County to sign up for the Academy by calling the club’s office on telephone number 337 4562.
A total of 65 club members would be part of the Academy while the remaining 55 places are available for non-members.
The main aim of the Academy is to improve the cricketing skills of the youths while preparing them to be positive Sports’ Ambassadors and Role Models.
A total of twelve lectures have been arranged for the Academy on topics which include the History of cricket, HIV/AIDS, Importance of Discipline, Physical Fitness, Captaincy and the Scourge of Drug Abuse.
The Academy over the past 14 years have produced one West Indies ODI player, one West Indies ‘A’ team player, two West Indies female cricketers, five national senior players, 19 national youth cricketers and 65 for Berbice at all levels.
Some of the players produced by the Academy are Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Delbert Hicks, Esuan Crandon, Renwick Batson, Dominique Rikhi, Loyydel Lewis, Shemaine Campbelle, Erva Giddings, Shawn Pereira and Abdel Fudadin.
Closing date for entry to the Republic Bank Summer Classes Programme July 9, 2011 while the closing date for entry into the Cricket Academy is July 16.
